Will my ornament arrive rusty?
No. Your ornament is supplied in its natural steel finish and is designed to develop a beautiful rustic orange patina when left outdoors. Depending on the weather, this process usually begins within a few days and continues over the following weeks. If you'd like to speed up the process, a light spray of salt water will encourage the rust to develop more quickly.
Can the ornament stay outside all year round?
Yes. All of our garden ornaments are designed for year-round outdoor use. Rain, frost and sunshine all help create the natural weathered finish that makes each piece unique. No painting or maintenance is required.

How do I install the ornament?
Most of our garden ornaments simply push into the soil using the integrated stake or stem. They look beautiful in flower borders, raised beds, plant pots or amongst ornamental grasses. For the best visual effect, try grouping ornaments at different heights to create depth and interest.
Will the rust stain my patio or paving?
As your ornament develops its natural rust patina, some surface rust may transfer onto light-coloured paving or stone, particularly during wet weather. If placing your ornament on hard surfaces, we recommend using a plant pot or positioning it within a flower bed or border where any natural runoff won't be noticeable.
Is every ornament exactly the same?
No. Because every piece is handmade, each ornament has its own unique character. Small variations in welds, finish and the way the rust develops are all part of what makes a genuine handcrafted Savage Works ornament special.
Where is the best place to position my bird feeder?
For the best results, place your bird feeder in a quiet area of the garden where birds feel safe, ideally close to trees, hedges or shrubs. Position it away from busy pathways and high enough to discourage predators, while still making it easy for you to refill and enjoy watching your feathered visitors.
Does the feeder have drainage holes?
Yes. Our bird feeders are designed with drainage holes in the base to help rainwater escape, keeping bird food drier for longer and reducing the build-up of excess moisture.
Is the natural rust finish safe for birds?
Yes. Our bird feeders are handcrafted from mild steel, which naturally develops a surface rust patina when exposed to the weather. This natural rust is not treated with paints or chemical coatings and is perfectly suitable for outdoor garden use. We recommend keeping the feeder clean and regularly replacing bird food, just as you would with any bird feeder, to provide a healthy feeding environment for visiting birds.
Will the water turn rusty while my ornament is weathering?
Yes. As your ornament develops its natural rust patina, you may notice the water takes on a slight orange tint during the first few weeks. This is a normal part of the weathering process as the surface rust forms. Once the patina has fully developed, the amount of rust released naturally reduces, and the water will become much clearer.
If you'd prefer, you can allow the ornament to weather naturally before using it as a bird bath or rain catcher, or simply empty and refill it regularly during the initial rusting period.
